IT professionals needed to fill jobs
While many employment sectors are in high demand at the moment, with too many graduates and not enough jobs, the opposite is happening in the IT industry. The CEO of the information technology staffing firm Talener, Michael Dsupin, has said that this is an unusual problem, especially considering the age we are in. There is certainly more technology around than ever before, however there are not enough skilled IT professionals around to fill the jobs that this industry creates. While other industries tend to complain that the graduates are not skilled enough, the IT industry is complaining that there are simply not enough graduates looking for jobs in this sector.
This is a stark contrast to the early 2000s, when engineering and computer science graduates were finding it very difficult to find jobs. The number of IT graduates then greatly declined until 2007, when the number had dropped by around half. Many students were choosing to study other things, and while they knew how to work a computer and log on to sites like o2.co.uk, they were not studying the details of information technology. While at the moment, the numbers of IT students have increased, with around 15,000 new gradates available and looking for jobs, this number is nowhere near matching the 24,000 graduates of 2001.
Dsupin has said that it is not enough, however, for a candidate to simply have studied the right thing. They also need to have hands-on experience and passion. The former will prepare them for any eventuality within their job, and the latter will make the work enjoyable for both them, and others around them. Dsupin has even said that if someone does not have a degree, but is very passionate about technology, then they should still try their luck by applying to technology companies at intern or administrative level, as a willingness to learn is half the battle.
